South Williamsburg is generally considered the portion of Williamsburg south of the Williamsburg Bridge, although numbered streets designated as "south" extend north of the bridge. The Eastern border is generally considered Union Avenue, but the BQE also creates a significant physical and cultural divide. The neighborhood residents are primarily members of the Hasidic Jewish communities, particularly of the Satmar sect who settled in the area following World War II. Other significant ethnic groups include Puerto Ricans and prior to them, Italian immigrants. Rezoning of the waterfront has increased new development and brought an influx of wealthier residents to portions of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is primarily served by the (J), (M), and (Z), with (G) train stations at the eastern periphery. The East River ferry also has a South Williamsburg stop at S 10th Street.
