Red Hook

Red Hook juts out into the New York harbor, south of the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel. The industrial waterfront remains so but now there's a cruise ship terminal too. The Red Hook houses are the city's largest housing project and operated by NYCHA, and dominate much of the residential areas in the neighborhood. The area around Van Brunt Street has a thriving artist community. Because the neighborhood is underserved by the subway system, rents had historically been kept low allowing artists to find more space for their work. The 2009 season of MTV's Real World featured a loft on the Red Hook waterfront, driving interest in the neighborhood. Hurricane Sandy decimated the area and the storm surge line is marked in several places. The East River ferry and the IKEA Ferry both service the area.
